Format an SD card

Formatting erases every file on the card.

Back up the photos and videos you need before formatting.

  1. Switch off the camera and insert a compatible SD card.
  2. Turn the camera on and open its setup menu.
  3. Select Delete All and confirm deletion.
  4. Wait until it finishes before switching off or removing the card.

If formatting does not resolve the error

Check the card lock tab and test another compatible card. A damaged card may need replacing; formatting does not guarantee recovery. See SD card error checks. If you use a computer to format the card, verify the target drive and the file system required by the camera before erasing it.
